Health and Safety Officer – Zimbabwe


To implement, monitor, and enforce safety policies and procedures on construction sites at Karo Platinum Zimbabwe. The role ensures a safe working environment for all personnel by conducting regular safety inspections, promoting a culture of safety awareness, and ensuring full compliance with local regulations and company safety standards.

Qualification and Experience

  • Diploma or Degree in Occupational Safety & Health / Environmental Health / Engineering.
  • Recognised professional certification:
  • NEBOSH International General Certificate, NOSA SAMTRAC, ISO 45001 Lead Auditor; Registration with ISHEM Zimbabwe or SAZ is added advantage.
  • Conversant with Zimbabwe OHS legislation, ANSI/ASME lifting codes, NFPA/SAZ SANS fire standards and ISO 14001 basics.
  • At least 5 years’ experience as a Safety & Health practitioner on large-scale construction or mining projects, with a minimum of 3 years in Zimbabwe.
  • Computer literacy:
  • MS Office suite; ability to compile dashboards in Power BI or Excel.

KPI

  • ASystems & Compliance
  • Develop, roll-out and maintain the Site Safety & Health Management Plan in line with the applicable statutory laws (Construction, Safety) Regs SI 68/1990, NSSA requirements and ISO 45001.
  • Prepare legal appointments (e.g., 7(4) Construction Safety Officer) and maintain statutory registers, permits to work and safe work procedures.
  • B. Risk Management & Planning
  • Lead baseline, issue-based and continuous risk assessments (HIRA) for earthworks, civils, structural, mechanical, electrical and piping (SMEP) activities, dam construction
  • Approve Job Safety Analyses (JSA) and method statements submitted by contractors
  • Maintain the Construction Risk Register and track close-out of controls.
  • C. Training & Competence
  • Induct all employees, contractors and visitors (general, project-specific and task-specific inductions).
  • Facilitate mandatory courses: Working at Heights, Confined Space Entry, Hot-Work, Defensive Driving, First Aid & Firefighting.
  • Coach line supervisors on behaviour-based safety (BBS) and visible felt leadership (VFL) techniques.
  • D. Inspections, Audits & Monitoring
  • Conduct daily area inspections and weekly cross-functional audits of scaffolding, cranes, excavations, temporary electrics, PPE, hazardous substances and camp/lodge hygiene.
  • Use Karo’s electronic incident & action tracking system to record findings and drive close-out.
  • Trend leading and lagging indicators (TRIFR, LTIFR, near misses, observations) and present to the Weekly Construction Review and Monthly Steering Committee.
  • E. Incident Management
  • Lead investigations for all first aid, medical treatment, lost-time injuries, environmental excursions and significant near-misses using ICAM/5-Why methodology; agree corrective and preventive actions.
  • Liaise with medical providers, arrange medical surveillance and champion wellness campaigns (malaria, heat stress, fatigue).
  •  F. Emergency Preparedness
  • Maintain the Site Emergency Response Plan; organise drills for fire, pit wall failure, vehicle rollover and haz-chem spill scenarios.
  • Ensure emergency equipment (fire pumps, extinguishers, spill kits, rescue stretchers) is inspected and functional.
